CGC

The Center for Global Conservation (CGC) houses the headquarters for international programs of the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), an organization dedicated to protecting wildlife and places worldwide. Located on the Bronx Zoo campus, the new LEED-Gold certified office building embodies WCS's mission through its sensitive site integration and minimal use of energy and resources. Its linear three-story form, which inflects slightly to preserve existing trees, bridges two rock outcroppings and nestles into the ground. The material palette is minimal yet natural, featuring site-cast concrete, warm wood paneling and floor-to-ceiling bird-safe glazing that connects workers with the landscape. Along the exterior, a sloping plane angles from the ground to third floors, forming an intensive green roof planted with native grasses. This promenade culminates at an exterior terrace for expanding meeting space that is protected by the building's cantilevered roof.
